La Ruina Power Rankings: Week 22

August 31st, 2008by Rosen · 2 Comments

[Team name / Current point total as of Monday morning (+/- from last week) / Snarky comment]

1. Franklin Comes Alive (Chris Rosen) (me!) / 150 (+5.5): Confirming what I called three weeks ago, Carlos Zambrano’s arm injury is no longer hidden.

2. Made In The Dark (Justin) / 133 (-6.5): Justin is probably regretting trading both Xavier Nady and Vernon Wells at this point.

3. Worst Offense Ever (Kenny) / 131.5 (+7.5): Worst offense ever? Not really (Gottsegen is still in the league.) Best staff ever? Maybe.

4. The Audacity of VORP (Crimmings) / 121.5 (-3): Since trading Ian Kinsler for Jon Papelbon, Papelbon has four saves. (Shaking head.)

5. Bandera’s Mullet (Joey) / 120.5 (+3.5): Is Robinson Cano one of the five worst players in baseball? Yes.

6. The Worsts (Brian) / 117.5 (+0.5): I would like to officially apologize to Brian and Ryan Dempster. Clearly, I don’t know what I’m talking about, since Dempster is on his way to an improbable 19-win season with an ERA in the low 3s. Might be one of the most shocking seasons in my recent memory. I look forward to seeing which idiot drafts him next year.

7. The $3600 Suit (Alex) / 106 (-2): Armando Gallaragga has been surprisingly good.

8. Ryan Braun and the Shit (Kris) / 105.5 (+9.5): We’ve cracked 100 points!

9. No Drowning (Nick) / 87 (0): Kevin Gregg sucks.

10. Avoid The Clap (Tony) / 69 (-2.5): Was that a Yunel Escobar sighting on Sunday?

11. Rayburn (Chris Bleak) / 62.5 (-9): 290 innings under.

12. 0 (Chris Gottsegen) / 44 (-2): Flashback time! (For laughs!)

Round 6 (68): Eric Byrnes. I knew I’d get lambasted for this pick. He was one of three guys I was eying with this pick, along with Hunter Pence and Delmon Young. They both got drafted right before. What Byrnes did last year was beyond careering it. As I’ve noted a few times, statistically speaking he outplayed Grady Sizemore. And while I don’t think he’ll come close to 50 steals again (try 30), he makes solid contact and has some nice pop in his bat. I see .280, 20 homers, 80 ribbies, 30 steals.

I have shattered that glass ceiling into 18,000 pieces. Now what? Oh yeah, my team still sucks.
